2019 STAFF

  

DIRECTOR:  Tom Hoy returns for his 18th season as Director after serving as the Assistant Director for 21 years. Tom started his Kanawha career as a lifeguard in 1980, so 2019 is his 40th year at KRA!  After teaching math and coaching several sports for 46 years, Tom is enjoying being retired, doing some tutoring, traveling, and spending more time at Kanawha.  Tom and his wife, Kathy, have 5 children and 8 grandchildren.

 

 ASSISTANT DIRECTOR:  Martha Hodges returns for her 20th season as Assistant Director after having been the head lifeguard for 13 years.  Martha is a retired teacher, who now does some substituting, spends a lot of time at Kanawha, and coaches the Girls and Boys Tennis Teams at Tuckahoe Middle School.  She will also be in charge of the Early Bird Swim and the Lifeguarding classes.

 

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR:  Chip Carter returns for his 12th season as an Assistant Director.  Chip is the English Department Chairman at Godwin High School and is also the newspaper advisor there.   Chip and his wife, Terri, have 2 daughters.

LIFEGUARDS

 

HEAD LIFEGUARD:  Elise Taylor returns as head lifeguard for a second year. Elise is a 2019 graduate of Christopher Newport University and will be attending the London Veterinary School starting in September. 

HEAD LIFEGUARD:  Andrew Payne returns for his second summer as head lifeguard this year.  Andrew is a 2017 graduate of Glen Allen High School, where he ran cross country and track.  He is a rising junior at Virginia Tech, and this is his 4th summer as a lifeguard at KRA.

Caroline Willhite will be a lifeguard for her 4th season, after a year as a gatekeeper.  She is a 2018 graduate of Steward School, where she was a member of the Drama Club, Chorus, and the National Honor Society.  Caroline is a rising sophomore at James Madison University.

Tori Booth will be a lifeguard for her 3rd season, after substituting for a year.  She is a 2019 graduate of Douglas Freeman and will attend Longwood University in the fall.

Rett Hill will be a lifeguard for his 3rd season.  He is a 2017 graduate of Deep Run High School's Technology Specialty Center, where he played tuba in the concert band, marching band, and pep band.  He is a rising junior at Appalachian State University.

Annie Stephens returns for her 2nd season as a lifeguard this summer after working 2 seasons as a gatekeeper.  She is a rising senior at Douglas Freeman, where she is a member of the swim team, and she is an accomplished piano player.

Jordan Barnes returns for her 2nd season as a lifeguard after working 1 season as a gatekeeper.  She is a rising senior at Douglas Freeman and is very active in Kanawha's diving program.

Currie Costen returns for her 2nd season as a lifeguard staff after substituting for a year.  She is a rising senior at Douglas Freeman and is an accomplished dancer.

Kenzie Gilson returns for her 2nd season as a lifeguard.  She is a rising senior at Douglas Freeman, where she is a member of the Show Choir and the Thespian Society.  

Ellieblue Gurkin returns as a lifeguard for her 2nd season.  She is a rising senior at Douglas Freeman.

Maddy Miller returns as a lifeguard for her 2nd season, after substituting for a year.  She is a rising senior at Douglas Freeman, where she plays lacrosse.  She is also an accomplished dancer.

Sarah Ann Mottley returns as a lifeguard for her 2nd season, after substituting for a year.  She is a rising senior at Douglas Freeman, where she is a member of the swim team and the Show Choir.

Lowell Smith returns as a lifeguard for his 2nd season.  He is a rising senior at Douglas Freeman, where he runs cross country, winter track, and spring track.
