Greetings from the KRA President

Dear KRA Families,

The entire KRA Board of Directors and I could not be more excited to welcome you all back to Kanawha for the long-anticipated Summer of 2018.

We have so many exciting things happening around KRA. The new eight-lane Tom Hoy Competition Pool looks fantastic and blends seamlessly with the rest of our facility. Whether you are a competitive swimmer or you never venture off the pool deck, you are going to love the new pool. In addition to giving us more options for swim team and our masters swim program, the new pool project accomplished a number of other needed objectives. Most importantly, in a continuing effort to make Kanawha more accessible and inclusive for members of all abilities, the new pool is equipped with a pool lift for the mobility impaired and there are extra sets of railings on the pool steps. In addition, we increased our total pool deck space, rebuilt the ever-popular bleachers and added multiple charging stations along the top wall. These are all changes we should all enjoy for decades to come.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned this year it is that Kanawha is filled with very smart, highly talented members who volunteer their talents to serve this organization. The new pool is a reality because of decades of big-hearted volunteerism. Everyone who has ever served on the Kanawha Board in any capacity, volunteered at Kanawha in any capacity should be very proud of the health and vibrancy our Association now enjoys.

So many people helped bring us to Saturday’s Opening Day ceremony where we cut the ribbon for the Tom Hoy Competition Pool. The MVP’s include these folks who contributed at an astoundingly high level:

-Mike Locher, Vice President, and Karl Kratzer, Immediate Past President, were the force behind getting the pool built on time and at a superb level of quality that will serve us for generations. Their efforts are measured in the hundreds if not thousands of hours and we are indebted.

-David Kennedy, our Treasurer, brought his financial acumen to bear, helped us negotiate the very best financing possible and allowed us to navigate new financial waters.

-Past KRA boards and especially past Presidents Sabra Wilhite and Chuck Pollard put us in the enviable position to be able to take on a project like this without raising dues or requiring a special assessment. We all owe these individuals thanks for their financial stewardship and leadership.

-Longtime member Billy Riggs, who back in the Fall of 2016 volunteered the initial spatial thinking and digital sketch which helped us focus in on how we could make the new pool a reality.

-Amy Hughes, our Social Chair, planned and executed the Opening Night Party and Saturday’s Opening Day events with complete professionalism and delivered terrific events for our membership to enjoy.

I also want to thank Tom Hoy, Martha Hodges, and Chip Carter, who work as our pool staff team year-round. They each put in countless extra hours over the winter to check in on construction, accommodate tennis and other activities that were impacted, and keep the Board in the loop. Their dedication and service to the pool is truly one of those assets that sets KRA apart.

I could go on but I won’t. Just know that we are ready for you and we especially welcome our new members! We want everyone to come out and enjoy the facility. Swim team is underway. Dive team starts this Tuesdayand for the first time practices are different from swim team so KRA kids can do BOTH dive and swim! Tennis is underway on all levels. Group swim lessons are gearing up. Our Board has been working for you all year and will continue to over the summer so take some time to thank them because I know I do! For those who I got to see Friday night at the party or Saturday around the pool, you know what an exciting summer is ahead of us. For those I might have missed, I look forward to seeing you at the pool.  If you have any questions, grab me or any member of the Board and we can discuss over a limeade. We still have the best in town.

Travis
