New KRA Tennis Director

The Board of Directors of KRA is thrilled to announce that we have hired Houston Barrick as our new Tennis Director. Barrick is currently the Associate Head Coach for the men’s team at VCU where he has been for the last 4 seasons. He has helped the Rams reach three straight Atlantic 10 Championship matches. Under his guidance, VCU has earned 11 All-Conference awards, and had two student-athletes reach the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. Prior to joining the VCU staff, Barrack spent two years as a club professional at Belle Meade Country Club in his hometown of Nashville, Tennessee. Before that, he was an assistant at Cornell University, where he helped to lead the Big Red to its first ever Ivy League championship and earn its first NCAA Tournament berth.

As a player, Barrick played at UVA and helped the Cavaliers to three National Indoor team championships during his four years in Charlottesville. He was a four year starter at Virginia and a two-time team captain. He posted an impressive 60-0 record in the ACC over his tenure there. He played as high as #1 in both singles and doubles and finished his time as UVA with a singles record of 102-31 and a doubles record of 115-34. He is a two-time NCAA All-Tournament Team selection and was named the 2010 ACC Tournament MVP. Following his senior season, Barrick was named All-ACC first team. He was also an outstanding student where he was chosen to the All-ACC Academic Team in 2009 and 2010. Before ending his career as a player and moving into coaching, Barrick ranked as high as #2 in doubles competition and #50 in singles.

Houston and his wife, Laura, welcomed their first child, Charlotte, in May. At KRA, Houston’s primary responsibilities will be administrative. He will ensure that the club is staffed with high level teaching professionals, organize clinics and events, develop lesson plans, and will oversee all other aspects of the KRA tennis program. This newly created position will allow Houston to focus on making sure we have a top-notch tennis program, while our other pros will focus on daily instruction.

Please join us in welcoming him to Kanawha!

Dear Kanawha Members,

It is a pleasure, and an honor to chosen to lead the KRA tennis program. I am so excited to be joining such a wonderful club. When my wife and I first moved to Richmond, I had the opportunity to help teach part-time at KRA. I was treated with so much respect and kindness. When this opportunity arose, I knew I had to find a way to make it work.

I will be continuing as the Associate Head coach at VCU, but will be overseeing all parts of the tennis program on a daily basis. The spring is my busiest time at VCU, so please bear with me as we make this transition. We are currently beginning a search for full time Assistant Professionals. They will be in charge of all clinics, and will also be teaching private lessons. When time permits, I will also be teaching. But, my main objective is to create a strong tennis environment for all KRA members. Some changes will be made in the future, so please be patient over the next few months as we go about implementing those. In the next few days, we will be releasing the spring schedule for both junior and adult clinics. Sign-ups will be online for those who would like to go ahead and get their spot reserved!

The schedule for the Junior Clinics will be posted on the KRA web site by the end if this week.  An email with the schedule will also be sent by the end of this week.

I am looking forward to meeting, and talking with you all in the near future. My email address is
