President’s Message & Notice of Annual Meeting 2017
Dear KRA Member,
The seasons are changing and so is Kanawha with the beginning of demolition of our new pool. The purpose of this letter is to share an update with you and to provide official notice for the KRA Annual Meeting on Tuesday, October 17, at 7:30 p.m., so please see below for all details.
End of Summer Update:
The Kanawha Recreation Association 2017 summer swim season ended on Labor Day. We had another great season at the pool with exciting swim meets, diving meets, tennis matches and many fantastic parties. Thanks are due to countless volunteers and our staff for making great summer memories possible for our membership. We want to encourage everyone to reach out to their network of friends and encourage them to join our Kanawha family. We do have space for more members in 2017.
Over the summer, the Kanawha Board of Directors and design partners completed the design for the replacement competition pool. I am very excited to announce that the board recently selected the contractor and financing firm, respectively, that are going to make our eight-lane pool a reality. This week, our selected contractor, Taylor and Parrish has started to mobilize into the area behind the basketball courts and to demolish the existing bleachers and six-lane pool. We have been working toward this toward for many years, and construction has finally begun. As planned, the majority of the construction work on the new pool and deck will be completed by the winter holidays. Work on the filtration systems and associated plumbing and electrical systems will continue into the Spring, as will the finishing touches on the pool. We will be open for swim team practice in May of 2018.
Construction will create a few inconveniences to ensure the safety of our membership and neighbors along Holmes Avenue and Ziontown Road. Specifically, we will need to preclude parking along the pool back access road adjacent to the basketball court and two tennis courts between Ziontown and the pool. There will be parking made available from Ziontown during daylight hours. There are places to park at the south end of Courts 8 & 9, with access from Ziontown Road.
Safety in Construction Zone:
Our contractors will provide safety barriers, fencing to contain the construction zones. We know there will be those interested in the progress made of this project. The KRA Board and our contractors respectfully ask that parents help keep curious children away from this site.
Annual Meeting & Open Board Positions:
We hope that you will join us for the Annual Meeting. It is a great time to be involved in KRA. We encourage all members who are interested and willing to serve in a more dedicated capacity to reach out about future board positions. Our board positions are designed to roll off on a 2-3 year cycle, so we are always looking for new members ready to take that next step of involvement. Over the next 12-36 months we will be looking to fill every board position. If interested, please reach out to me with a call or email.
Current Board Members and their planned year of roll off are listed below in the Annual Meeting notice.
